Music on the Plaza

The Sun Messengers will play during the weekly Music on the Plaza concert series 7 p.m. Thursday in downtown Grosse Pointe.  Bring lawn chairs and picnic baskets, and enjoy the free concert.

Beatles fans will be in heaven as they hear the opening notes to the songs of the Beat Club on Wednesday at the Summer Music Festival at the Grosse Pointe War Memorial, 32 Lake Shore Drive, Grosse Pointe Farms. Group members look, dress and play exactly the way the Beatles did. Grounds open at 6 p.m., and concerts begin at 7:30 p.m. rain or shine.  Admission is $8

 

Get Ready to Tour Local Gardens

The 17th Annual Summer Garden Tour featuring six gardens in the Grosse Pointes will be 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday and Sunday.  Sponsored by the Grosse Pointe Garden Center, tickets are $12 pre-tour and $15 on tour days and are available at local merchants and at the Grosse Pointe War Memorial, 32 Lake Shore Drive.

On Saturday, have a look at the “gently used” garden and home treasures will be on sale at the War Memorial.

In the Garden With Mil Hurley

Spend an evening in the Grosse Pointe War Memorial Garden with Mil Hurley during a fundraiser for the Garden Center 6-8 p.m. Friday.  There will be hors d’oeuvres and beverages.  Proceeds benefit the education, beautification, horticulture and conservation of the community.  Cost is $35 and includes a ticket to the 17th Annual Summer Garden tour Saturday and Sunday.

 

Saturday is Flag Day

If your “Old Glory” is looking a bit torn and tattered, take it to the Grosse Pointe War Memorial and they will properly and respectfully dispose of it.  They also have new flags to purchase. The flag kit comes with a 3’ x 5’ nylon flag, 6’ pole and a sturdy metal bracket.  Cost is $50.  Proceeds benefit the mission of the War Memorial.

The Russ Miller Quintet provides the backup for the vocal stylings of his wife, Jeannine, at 7 p.m. Thursday for the St. John Hospital & Medical Center Music on the Plaza jazz concert series at the corner of Kercheval and St. Clair.  Bring your picnic basket and lawn chairs.

 

Dads, kids and baby animals

If you’re looking for a little outdoor adventure on Father’s Day this Sunday, you might consider stopping by the Grosse Pointe War Memorial and visiting the Baby Animal Day and Petting Zoo.

There will be sheep, ducks, bunnies, goats, donkeys, chickens as well as puppies, kittens and free pony rides.

Cost is $3 per person and free for children 1 and under. Weather is not a consideration.  In event of rain the festivities will take place in the ballroom.

The Grosse Pointe War Memorial is located at 32 Lakeshore Drive in Grosse Pointe Farms just east of Fisher Road.  Residents of all communities are welcome.

 

Join the AcaFella Study Break

 Looking for a great way to finish off a warm June day?  Grosse Pointe North High School is extending an invitation to the AcaFella Study Break Concert 7 p.m. Friday at North’s Cooper’s Square (enter from the main parking lot). Admission is free, but there is a suggested $10 donation for adults, $5 for students.  Proceeds will benefit the Tricia Myers Foundation.

Grosse Pointe North and South High School Jazz Bands, conducted by David
Cleveland and Dan White. Bring your lawn chairs and a picnic basket, and be
there when the music starts at 7 p.m. at the Village Festival Plaza, city of Grosse
Pointe.
